A Visit to Guide Dogs' Campus
So this morning, having everything better to do with my time, I decided to play hooky from all the projects I should have been working on. And I drove to the GDB campus for a tour. I had only been there once before for a graduation. Cabana and I were the only ones there for the tour today, so we got our own private one! Thanks to Brian, our excellent tour guide, pictured below.
Here's some pics of a puppy socialization outing on the grounds. This pup has petals stuck to her nose!! She reminds me of someone wearing a fake mustache.
Photos of pups in the kennels. Such cuties!
Recalled dogs in the kennels.
Pups at playtime with volunteers. The collie is Pearl, who helps socialize the puppies. She's gorgeous!
And Cabana in front of the puppy truck.
This is the only time she sat calmly for the whole hour. She was totally hyped up (i.e. pulling on her leash non-stop), being so close to all those puppy pals. Now she's snoozing on the floor, absolutely exhausted. Hopefully, being around the kennels a bit will help prepare her for recall (fingers crossed). I might take her to the campus every few months--I hate to think of her being scared there, and I'm hoping being there previously will help at least a little bit.
Jealous, I wish I lived close enough to campus to go there more often. I love it, I haven't seen the mural yet and it looks so good! And I never get sick of seeing baby puppy in the GDB kennel pictures. Thanks for sharing. That is a good idea though, to get Cabana used to campus before recall. :D
Thanks, Megan. I don't get tired of seeing the babies, either! I could have stood there for hours and hours. But I figured my tour guide had other things he'd rather do than wait for me to get my puppy fix. Plus, I felt bad for Cabana who could only watch when I know she was dying to join in the fun.
I'm not sure how I came across your blog, but I really like it! :) My husband and I are puppy sitters up in Washington State. We saw one of the first puppies we worked with go back this weekend to begin her formal training in Oregon. :( I wish I could go and see all the small puppies in CA. They are so cute! :)
How fun! I haven't been to the CA campus in a couple of years, and wish I could go back. The baby puppies are so adorable in these pictures! I love the first puppy coming down the stairs! I am sure that taking Cabana there every once in a while will help her be more comfortable during formal training.
If she is not getting spayed while you have her staying on campus during her heat will help her adjust to training. All of my puppies that have boarded on campus while in heat are very excited to get there for recall so it must not be too bad!

I was able to go to GDB's San Rafael campus three times in the three years we raised and Boring's numerous times (we live two hours north of the California border and three hours south of the Boring campus). I greatly enjoyed every visit to each campus and I'm sure will make the trip down to SR again even though we're not raising for them anymore, we still love them!
Forget Disneyland, GDB is the happiest place on earth! I make up an excuse to go down there whenever possible, of course. The campus is beautiful and those puppies just keep getting cuter and cuter. :)
Oh! I have puppy fever now! It's not quite the same knowing you have a 6 month old coming at recall, rather than one of those babies! But, we will love Poppy just the same!
